REFORESTATION TO CHANGE CLIMATE
LAYING OFF DROUGHT

The earth’s land surface is composed of 30 percent area under forest cover. The growth of forests allows trees to take in carbon from the air and store it in plant roots, trunks, leaves and in the soil. Clearing out of these rare assets by deforestation releases out carbon dioxide into the atmosphere contributing to climate change. This in turn causes global warming and creates non-conducive weather conditions such as drought, floods and storms.

The solution to solve these harsh climatic conditions is reforestation and the natural regeneration of forest ecosystems. Reforestation is the process of replanting forest areas destroyed. Planting back of trees will bring more rain, boost soil fertility, reduce soil erosion, prevent global warming and improve air circulation. This is clearly the mystery to save Kenya in the middle of the drought crisis we are facing. This method will reduce the impact of climate change and address more environmental issues especially in the arid and semi-arid regions.

Research shows that one trillion new trees could absorb one third of CO2 emissions, which is an exceptional strategy to eradicate famine; concerning the latter. The President of Kenya, William Ruto has directed the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) to hire 2700 forest rangers and 600 forest officers to drive the government vision to increase forest cover by 30 percent. He asserted that data on Kenya’s forest cover is warning since only 5.2 million square kilometres of Kenya’s 59.2 million square kilometres is under forest cover; leaving 54 million hectares as bare earth which is exposed to soil erosion and biodiversity loss. Growing 5 billion trees is the plan for Kenya to recover from its 3 years lack of rains that have left the nation in devastation.
